Tản mạn: DO NOT PREVENT GOD FROM HIS WAY

Sometimes, the enthusiastic attitude and behavior of Christians may unintentionally cause discomfort for themselves and others, or even go against God’s intentions.

While studying the Kingdom of God, I learned a new word. The professor discussed what is needed for the Kingdom of God to grow and emphasized the importance of moderation. This is one idea that Christians should remember in their hearts so they live in line with God’s Will.

To better understand this concept, according to normal meaning, “overzealous” is a word indicating a person who is “too enthusiastic and eager, often in a way that is disapproved or excessive.” People who have this attitude and these behaviors often do so because of their emotions and personal thinking.

In the Old Testament, “overzealous” was mentioned as “a stiff-necked people” (Ex 32:9). The reason for this stiff-neckedness of Israel came from “they did not listen to me or pay attention... more evil than their ancestors.” (Jer 7:26) In the New Testament, Jesus condemned the attitude of Hebrew people at Nazareth synagogue (cf. Lk 4, 23-27). Stephen also sharply condemned the Sanhedrin, saying, “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 7:51).

Under the light of the Gospel, Christians in all ages have recognized that they can contribute to God’s plan, yet they can also become obstacles to God’s Will. Are we a “channel” or “obstacle” of God?
