Tản mạn: THE UNIFORM OF THE SETTING OF LEGIONARIES’ MEETINGS
The term “uniform,” as cited in Handbook no. 1, Chapter 18, highlights and reinforces the importance of unity. Therefore, on the surface of the white cloth, the words “Legio Mariae” are displayed, rather than the name of the praesidium. The Legion of Mary, present in every corner of the world, adopts this uniform as a symbol of legionaries’ unity—representing one mind, one soul, and one body.
Furthermore, Handbook no. 1, Chapter 18, sets forth the significant requirement for uniform altar decoration at meetings, making no distinction between different praesidium. The altar should feature “a statue of the Immaculate Conception (in the attitude of the distribution of Graces), flanked by two vases of flowers and two candlesticks with lighted candles.” This arrangement reflects the deep meaning of the Queen present among her soldiers; the altar must not be separated from the meeting table or positioned so that the statue is outside the circle of members. Additionally, the display of filial love toward our Heavenly Mother calls for the equipment and flowers to be of the highest quality possible.
The chapter 27 of the Handbook goes on the role of Vexillum, which is “an adaptation of the standard of the Roman Legion. The eagle which surmounted the standard is replaced by the Dove, the emblem of the Holy Spirit. Beneath the Dove a cross-bar bears the inscription “Legio Mariae” (Legion of Mary). Intermediate between cross-bar and staff (and joined to the former by a rose and a lily) is an oval frame bearing a representation of the Immaculate Conception (the Miraculous Medal). The staff is set in a globe which, for use on a table, stands on a square base. The whole design conveys the idea that the world is to be conquered by the Holy Spirit acting through Mary and her children.” Pope Pius XI praised the Vexillum of Legionaries as “That beautiful standard of the Legion of Mary.”
The Vexillum, often compared to a national flag, is considered the soul of a nation in both literal and figurative battles. During conflict, the flag bearer stands in a prominent position, holding the flag high; if this soldier falls, another immediately takes their place, maintaining the flag’s presence. As long as the army sees their flag, they are inspired to fight with devotion for their nation. Conversely, when the flag is lowered, it signals defeat, while a white flag signifies surrender. The Vexillum serves as a representative of both the army and the Legion of Mary. Throughout generations, the Vexillum is raised in every corner of the world as legionaries pass on their duties to successors. To remind each legionary of its significance, the Vexillum is colorfully printed on a small handheld Tessera, making it convenient to carry. When legionaries become auxiliaries, the Tessera is placed on the home altar beneath the Holy Cross, alongside statues of Jesus and the saints. Upon their passing, the Tessera is positioned at the center or corner of a framed memorial photo of the departed legionary. Thus, the Vexillum transcends its physical form, becoming a spiritual symbol and a representation of the legionaries’ spirit.
Every time we warmly welcome a sister/ a brother who joins us as an active member. She/ He, along with all members—especially active ones—is called to embody the honor of being a warrior of Our Lady. We are proud of these courageous warriors who will continue to uphold and carry the Vexillum. Raise it high! Be brave! Warriors of Our Lady. Amen.
