Happy May! As we enter this special month, we share this greeting because the Church dedicates the entire month of May to honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary with filial love and devotion. In many places around the world, May is also called the Month of Flowers, symbolizing the "flowers of life"—our prayers, good works, and sacrifices—that each Christian offers to Mary, our Mother.

Handbook of legionaries opens chapter 6: The Duty of Legionaries towards Mary with declaration: “The honouring of the Legion devotion to Mary by serious meditation and zealous practice is placed on each member as a solemn trusteeship to the Legion. It is to be regarded as an essential part of legionary duty, ranking before any other obligation of membership.” (Chapter 6, paragraph 1)

How can legionaries evaluate whether their “serious meditation and zealous practice” truly fulfill their “solemn trusteeship to the Legion”? Over weeks, months, and years spent in the same familiar meetings, prayers, and assignments, there is a genuine risk of becoming spiritually numb amid routine gatherings and tasks, leading to complacency, negligence, or discouragement in our interior life. As the handbook reminds: “the legionary without Mary in his heart… divorce from the legionary purpose. He is an unarmed soldier, a broken link, or rather as a paralyzed arm – attached to the body, it is true – but of what use for work!” (Chapter 6, paragraph 2)

However, May is a wonderful time for us to renew our love for our Mother. It is especially important to internalize the ultimate purpose of every legionary—to bring Mary to the world as the surest way to lead souls to Jesus (Chapter 6, paragraph 2). Though we continue to gather in the same weekly meetings, carry out the same familiar assignments, and meet the same faces, we are called to approach each task with fresh enthusiasm and a deepened love for Mary. 

Let us embrace this opportunity to renew our intentions and extend heartfelt blessings to one another: Happy May, dear Brothers and Sisters, in union of Mary!
